Some players report that the queues for purchasing new land had more people waiting in them than plots available. The option for Free Companies to move their bases into Shirogane for free ended with the available land quickly being bought up in bulk by both guilds and wealthy players.

While in-game guilds (or Free Companies) still had to buy the plot itself, they could move already constructed bases onto purchased plots of land for free. One of the earlier attempts to fix the housing issue was to provide more player homes in a brand-new region. In a situation that eerily mimics real life, many found that the land distribution was anything but fair.
When housing was introduced in 2011, producer Naoki Yoshida presented players with exactly how land prices were calculated to show that land distribution would try to be fair and equal among all players. Square Enix has attempted to fix this crisis through various updates to Final Fantasy XIV, with an upcoming 5.31 update showing the development team might finally have a plan to combat this issue.
